On a déjà hâte!

English Version

I am a fan of IQ ever since the album “The Wake” of 1985 but I had not had the occasion to see them live until yesterday evening. Back in Quebec  City after 2 years of absence (since back at the Imperial on April 11, 2015) and where singer Peter Nicholls had offered a solid service in spite of a bad cold, IQ entered on scene right on time (20: 00) under the applause of an already conquered crowd! The Jean-Paul Tardif Place was practically full and the energy of the enthusiastic crowd was surely used as a catalyst for the band members who had made the voyage to Quebec City only for this isolated concert date!

The show began with the song “Breathtaker” from the album “Subterranea”: Peter Nicholls was in voice and embarked at once in his storyteller role with his gesturals while the musicians kept pace under sober but effective lighting and with various projections on three adjacent screens behind them. Mr. Nicholls allowed himself to exchange some French sentences with his audience between the songs and began by saying “Merci! Bonsoir Québec! “which charmed the crowd. Following that was a combo of songs with “Knucklehead” from the latest album (The Road Of Bones) and “The Magic Roundabout” from the album “The Wake”. The musicians were faithful to themselves and delivered the goods professionaly, well  worthy of their reputation. “From The Outside In” was then played: the throbbing guitar of Mike Holmes hit home while projections of the album cover and file images from the first Dracula movie were slowly being covered with blood! The title track of the album “The Road Of Bones” was then played: the projection of parts from the video along with the lighting which created larger than life shadows of Peter Nicholls on the walls added effect to the song. A standing ovation followed! “Constellations” was then played: the images which accompanied the music, Peter Nicholls in voice as well as the musicians who were playing out the song perfectly (sounds of the birds included) assured us that the band members still enjoy playing together. “The Narrow Margin” from the album “Subterranea” showed us Peter Nicholls using his voice as though it hadn't changed (too much) through the years. The guitar of Mike Holmes was as mesmerizing as back when I heard this song for the first time in 1997. The title track of the album “Frequency” was then played to the delirious crowd which was feeding from their music without any reserve. “Guiding Light” from the album “The Seventh House” began with Mr. Nicholls alone on scene with the synth player before the other band members came in to join them. Projections and the lighting increased the effects of the song and filled our senses! “Until The End” was added to the list of the well-played songs from the last album. The end of the song where there was only the acoustic guitar and the keyboards left was magical. The title song “The Wake” spontaneously made the crowd raise to their feet and clap their hands until the end of it.

After this song, Peter Nicholls told us that IQ has been existing for 36 years and that they do not intend to stop coming here to give shows on our premises as long as there will still be gorgeous people like us around. IQ then played the long song “The Last Human Getaway” from their first album, finishing their set in front of a delirious crowd. The band returned for two encores and were greeted each time with a standing ovation. The songs “Failsafe” from “Subterranea” and “Headlong” from the album “The Wake” were played to the fans of IQ who were having a great time and so finished in beauty this splendid evening. Note that Peter Nicholls returned for the second encore while wearing the “Maniaque de Musique Prog” tee-shirt which had been given to him before the show. The evening finished with the words of Peter Nicholls: “Bonsoir, bonne nuit, à la prochaine fois! “ We just can't wait!
